Mount Kinnekulle is proudly stretch high above the surface of Lake Vänern. Given the tremendous values in nature along with the cultural values in the area, the mountain has a reason to be proud. Here is a diversity in nature that can only be seen in a few other places in the whole world and a cultural heritage that should be conserved and developed in the best recommended way. During the fall of 2004, three municipalities decided to conduct a feasibility study about the possibilities of establishing a biosphere reserve along the southern perimeters of Lake Vänern, including Mount Kinnekulle.
A biosphere reserve in the three municipalities along the coastline of Lake Vänern, marks the beginning of a process with new ways of cooperation where the administration of natural and cultural resources is linked to a sustainable development of local communities. The development of the Biosphere Reserve was made possible by funding from the environmental Protection Agency, Region Västra Götalands Environment Board, and the municipalities of Götene, Lidköping and Mariestad. Local involvement and support was the key component in the feasability study, where several associations and organisations are actively involved.
